These two visual aids compare and contrast the different views people had about the Vietnam Memorilal. The first graphic was taken from an interview conducted about Maya Lin. In the interview she describes the purpose of the memorial and exposes that she wanted the wall to be a place of remembrance where people would ponder the feeling of grief and would come to terms with it. Instead of celebrating the Vietnam War itself it took a focus on the people and their sacrifice. Though she saw her design conception as a place to come to terms with grief, others like Tom Carhart saw the design as disrespectful. In the Washington article he states that the design was inadequate that the design should not only focus on the dead, but on all of the veterans who participated in the war. He also argues that instead of a site of national healing the memorial represents a repugnant black gash on the ground. Despite the public outcry the design was accepted by the committee and today it represents a place of honour for those who fought in the Vietnam War.
